I have to think, isn’t it a little backwards that, while it upsets you that the show is so similar to other Enokido works, it also bothers you that fails to *be* them? You’re looking for the aspects you appreciate most in his work, such as character growth and meaning. If we’re headed into the “Black Rose” part of Star Driver, I welcome that, since most of the Kiraboshi have had their first round of being poked at to discover their weaknesses… I just can’t know for sure, and I’m finding it hard to trust a narrative that throws so many loose ends out and then leaves them there.

The Ayingott battle, while being very unexpectedly grimdark, just isn’t weighted enough that it feels like a breaking moment for Takuto. By this point in Utena, we’d already had the massive smackdown duel between Touga and Utena that shattered her idea that she could just walk through any fight – and forced her to grow as a result. I want to believe this show is going somewhere, I just don’t see any -evidence- of it, which is really frustrating.

I really want this show to be better, but I have no clue if it has any real underlying direction apart from ‘scandalous direction’ from the newbie (who still isn’t as scandalous as Ikuhara was) and Enokido going off on another of his wild tangents.
